If you’re researching garden room foundations, you’ve likely come across ground screws.
At Miniature Manors, we build the majority of our garden rooms using ground screw foundations. Ground screws are a modern alternative to traditional concrete bases. They are large steel screws that are driven into the ground to create a strong, stable foundation for your garden room.

What Are Ground Screws?
Ground screws are heavy-duty steel screws that are mechanically driven into the ground to form a stable and load-bearing foundation. They support the structure above without the need for excavation, concrete pouring, or long curing times — making them a faster and cleaner solution for garden room construction.
Why Use Ground Screws for a Garden Room?
Minimal disruption
No extensive digging or heavy groundwork. This keeps your garden tidy and where possible, reduces mess during the build.
Faster installation
On an average garden room project, ground screws are typically installed in a single day, allowing construction to begin immediately.
Works with existing surfaces
In many cases, we can install screws straight through existing concrete or hardstanding, avoiding the need for costly removal.
Improved airflow and durability
The raised structure allows air to circulate beneath the building, helping to reduce moisture build-up and improve longevity.
Ideal for tricky sites
Ground screws are ideal for sloping gardens, restricted access, or areas close to trees where traditional foundations can be problematic. In our Garden Room Art Studio project, ground screws enabled us to build on a sloped site, creating a stable base alongside a retaining wall to manage the change in levels. The art studio sits organically in its beautiful country garden setting.

Eco-Friendly Option
Ground screws are a more environmentally friendly option compared to concrete. They do not require the use of concrete or other materials that can negatively impact the environment, making them a sustainable choice for eco-conscious homeowners.
Installed In-House for Quality Control
We install all of our ground screws ourselves — something not all garden room companies do. This means we maintain full control over the installation process, ensuring every foundation is set out and installed to suit the exact design of the building.
Our ground screw system is covered by design liability insurance, giving you confidence that the foundations are structurally sound. We can also provide pull test data and structural calculations where required, including for building control approval.

A Better Alternative to Concrete?
While concrete still has its place, ground screws offer a more flexible, efficient, and lower-impact solution for most garden room projects. They allow us to build faster, reduce disruption, and deliver a high-quality result without compromising on strength or performance.
For highly soundproofed garden rooms or music studios, we may recommend a concrete base. This is because the additional mass of concrete can help improve acoustic performance, particularly where higher levels of sound isolation are required. As always, we’ll advise on the most suitable foundation based on how you plan to use the space.
How We Check the Ground Works for Your Build
Before we install any ground screws, we effectively “test” the ground as we go. Using our installation equipment, we monitor the resistance of the ground as the screws are driven in. This gives us a live reading of how strong the ground is and how well the screws are performing.
If needed, we can also carry out further testing on-site — installing a test screw and applying load to confirm everything is performing exactly as it should. It’s a simple but really important part of the process, helping ensure your garden room is built on solid, reliable foundations from day one.
