Transforming your garden room into a gym can be an excellent way to utilise the space and create a convenient workout area at home. If you are at the start of your garden room journey, here are some tips and tricks to help you plan your garden room gym design:
1. Assess your needs!
Consider the type of workouts you plan to do and the equipment you’ll require. Make a list of essential gym equipment such as cardio machines, weights, yoga mats, resistance bands, or any specific equipment needed for your preferred workouts.

2. Plan the layout
Sketch a floor plan to visualize the layout of your gym. Take measurements of the available garden space and arrange the equipment in a way that maximizes the room’s functionality. Leave enough room for free movement and ensure there’s sufficient space between the equipment for safety. With our bespoke design service, our team can transform your sketch into a 3D drawing so you can see the layout of your gym to scale. This is a fantastic way to see how your garden gym will look before proceeding with a build.
3. Flooring
Choose suitable flooring that can withstand the impact of workouts and protect the underlying structure. Rubber flooring or interlocking foam tiles are popular choices as they provide cushioning, absorb noise, and are easy to clean.
4. Mirrors
We can install mirrors on one or more walls to create a sense of space and allow you to monitor your form during exercises. Mirrors also reflect light, making the room feel brighter and more inviting.

5. Lighting
Adequate lighting is crucial for a gym space. If possible, maximize natural light by having large doors and full heigh windows. Additionally, install plenty of spotlights to ensure proper visibility during workouts, especially if you’ll be exercising during darker hours. If privacy is important to you, we offer integrated blinds in our doors and windows.
6. Ventilation and temperature control
Ensure the garden room has proper ventilation to prevent it from becoming stuffy and humid. Consider installing windows that can be opened, or use fans or air conditioning units to maintain a comfortable temperature while exercising. All of our garden room projects can have air conditioning installed as an extra feature. The unit will also heat the room during the cooler months of the year.
7. Storage and organisation
Incorporate storage solutions to keep your gym equipment organised and easily accessible. Install shelves, hooks, or storage bins to neatly store items like resistance bands, dumbbells, yoga mats, and workout accessories.
8. Music and entertainment
Create a motivating atmosphere by installing speakers or a sound system to play your favourite workout music. You can also consider mounting a television or tablet for streaming workout videos or connecting to fitness apps.

9.Personalise the space
Make the garden room gym inviting and reflective of your style by adding motivational quotes, artwork, or plants. Consider painting the walls in vibrant colours that energize your workouts. If you’re working from the room as a personal trainer or yoga/pilates instructor then consider having your branding. Let’s create a space that is inviting and inspiring for your clients!
10. Consider height
If you need extra head height, you may wish for your structure to be higher than the standard 2.5 metre designs. Depending upon where the structure sits in comparison to your boundaries, planning may be required for this. We have a high success rate at achieving planning permission for our clients and can assist with this if necessary. If you need to stick to permitted development rules, we can look to create a vaulted ceiling above any equipment that needs additional height.
