At Miniature Manors, we are proud to offer a bespoke design and build service on all of our garden rooms. One optional feature is a living or green roof. Having a living roof is an environmentally conscious trend that has been steadily growing in popularity amongst our customers. These unique rooftops not only contribute to the aesthetics of a garden room, but offer a myriad of environmental and practical benefits.
What is a Green Roof?
A green roof is a layer of vegetation that is planted on top of a drainage system and installed on top of a conventional roofing system. This living layer can range from a simple covering of hardy, low-maintenance plants to a more intricate garden space with a variety of flora. They can also be known as sedum roofs or grass roofs. The living roof trays we install will not compromise the integrity of your outbuilding. They are light weight and contain sedum style plants that need little maintenance.

The Benefits of a Green Roof
Environmental Advantages:
Stormwater Management: Green roofs absorb rainwater, reducing the risk of stormwater runoff and helping manage water flow during heavy rainfall.
Improved Air Quality: Plants on green roofs act as natural air filters, removing pollutants and contributing to better air quality. All plants carry out a process called carbon sequestration, where they filter the air for carbon dioxide during the photosynthesis process. Living roofs are therefore a fantastic option if you live in a city centre or built up suburban area.
Temperature Regulation: The soil and vegetation on green roofs provide natural insulation, helping regulate indoor temperatures and reducing energy consumption.

Aesthetic Appeal:
Blend with Nature: A green roof can transform an ordinary garden room into a harmonious extension of nature, enhancing the overall aesthetics of your structure. You may be inspired by our Garden Room Gym project in West Sussex which seamlessly blends a green fibre cement cladding with a beautiful green roof.
Biodiversity Boost: Introducing various plant species attracts insects, birds, and other wildlife, promoting biodiversity in your back garden! The green roof feature is a fantastic way to give back to nature, particularly when some of your outdoor space will be lost to your building. Look out for extra bees, birds and butterflies!
Energy Efficiency:
Natural Insulation: The insulating properties of green roofs can significantly reduce the need for heating and cooling, leading to lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint. When a garden room is used year round, this is a common sense addition to your project if budget allows.

How to maintain a Green Roof
Living Roofs are fantastic in self-regulating themselves against harm, but sometimes a little help can be needed for your roof to thrive year round. Remember to maintain your green roof with caution when working at height, and to ask an expert for help when in doubt. We suggest the following techniques to ensure your green roof stays strong and delivers on its numerous benefits:
Additional Water in Summer: During periods of low rainfall, we advise watering your living roof to give the plant life an extra boost. Be aware of overwatering – the plants are hardy and just need a little H2O to help them along.
Weeding: Check your roof for unwanted visitors, namely common garden weeds. Like the rest of your garden, weeds can pollinate to find a new home on top of your garden room. Remove weeds by hand to prevent them from competing with the desirable plants for nutrients and water.
Fertilisers: Our supplier recommends occasional fertilisation of your green roof for a slow release of nutrients. There are various fertilisers on the market which can be purchased by any green roof supplier.
